During its 84th and 85th legislative sessions, the Texas Legislature assigned the Bureau the responsibility of identifying the origins of earthquakes in Texas. In cases where earthquakes are potentially caused by human activity, the Bureau was also tasked with helping to prevent future occurrences. To achieve these objectives, the Texas Seismological Network and Seismology Research (TexNet) was established.

The mission of TexNet is to serve as an independent scientific body that monitors earthquake activity, analyzes associated data, and distributes findings and data to government, industry, and the public for their benefit and the benefit of the State of Texas.

As part of the program, the Bureau's TexNet research team has developed the TexNet Earthquake Catalog, an interactive webpage that provides information on the locations of monitoring stations and recorded earthquakes across the state. The map includes data recorded since January 1st, 2017, when data collection began. By keeping Texan citizens informed about earthquake activity, the catalog helps reduce the impact of future earthquakes through improved awareness and preparedness.
